The museum's new unit will install in a building of patrimonial value in the heart of the City Historic Centre. The resulting Museum construction will therefore include two buildings of great patrimonial and sentimental value to the city. In addition to the benefits of storage and exhibition space, this extension will enable the museum to improve its educational service standards.
This is one of the eight projects for the creation or renewal of infrastructures led by the Municipal Council in the scope of the European Capital of Culture. The programme includes the rehabilitation of public and private buildings of historical interest, together with improvements to urban areas, which have lost their key roles in the city’s cultural, social and economic process over time. The upgrading of these areas will give rise to a new backdrop to daily life and experience enabling Guimarães and the surrounding region to reposition itself on a national and European scale.
