The New Year 2012 rung in by thousands in the heart of the city
Guimarães brought in the New Year in a special way in the heart of the Historical City Center. On the invitation made by the Guimarães City Hall and Guimarães 2012, thousands of residents and visitors welcomed in the year which marks the European Capital of Culture in a unique event which characterized the city.
The City Hall, the City of Guimarães Foundation, the Guimarães Commercial and Industrial Association and the bar establishments of the Historical City Center rallied their forces together to share the stroke of midnight beckoning this extraordinary year for the entire population and all those visitors to this city of great heritage and culture which is Guimarães.
The evening began with musical entertainment and videos projected onto the façades at the Largo da Oliveira Square. The first minutes of 2012 were rung in with great euphoria by young and old alike, and by families who came to the city center to commemorate the year in which Guimarães will shine, being widely celebrated as a City of Culture.
Once the New Year had arrived, the bars of the Historical City Center joined in on the festivities celebrating into the wee hours of the morning with music which filled the Largo da Oliveira Square and the Praça de Santiago Square until 4 a.m.
