Marking 150 years of Memórias do Cárcere.
Without a doubt, 1862 is a landmark year in the work of Camilo Castelo Branco, not only for being the year in which «Amor de Perdição» (Love of Perdition) was written, but also for the publication of «Memórias do Cárcere» (Memories of Prison), work that reflects on his experience of incarceration for adultery at the Relação Prison in Porto.
In commemoration of the passage of 150 years, the City Hall of Famalicão and the Casa de Camilo have organized a reading and writing workshop in the context of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture.
This initiative will have the participation of the detainees of the Guimarães Prison, and will produce a book in which these men, much like Camilo so long ago, may learn to express themselves artistically and via literature, describing their feelings, experiences and memories.
This activity, directed toward the inmates at the Guimarães Prison will include the rewriting of some of Camilo’s works as a script of Memories of Prison, which will serve as the basis for a workshop process, documented on film by Tiago Afonso.
