Being the European Capital of Culture means to Guimarães and surrounding region the opportunity to match social, cultural, urban and economic processes in the same regenerator impulse. This is the great challenge for Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture: to be a meeting point of innovation, the place where anything can happen.
Considering the potentialities that Guimarães provides, related with its historical dimension and its living tradition in constant regeneration, four Programming Clusters were defined: City, Community, Thought and Art – the latter one unfolds in four artistic disciplines: Music, Performing Arts, Art and Architecture and, finally, Film and Audiovisual.
Special Projects is another programming area, respecting extraordinary events and actions that will play a key role in the promotion of the event – and of the city as well – at the national and international level.
Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture also includes a programme of cultural and artistic events designed by local associations. The project Tempos Cruzados (Intersecting Times) gathers the initiatives developed by local entities, and it is coordinated by Associação de Folclore e Etnografia de Guimarães, Convívio – Associação Cultural e Recreativa, and C.A.R. – Círculo de Arte e Recreio.
