Cartographies of Memory and of the Everyday
Os suportes mais correntes da ilustração têm em comum a proximidade com o observador, o seu usufruto não requer senão a distância do braço. Nesta intimidade com o corpo, o olhar apreende todo o seu espaço num lance imediato, podendo de seguida escrutinar os meandros, os recantos e minúcias da imagem, numa demora sem a distração do esforço.
O embaraço ou o espanto ou o riso ou a incompreensão ou a perplexidade podem ser experimentados sem reservas, sem ameaças, nesse enfrentamento solitário. Mas sem impedir a partilha, a cumplicidade com outros olhares que espreitam por cima do ombro à distância do mesmo braço ou tomam a imagem na ponta do próprio braço.
O projeto “Cartografias da Memória e do Quotidiano” subtrai a ilustração a essa distância de conforto do corpo e do olhar e projeta-a numa escala que, ora envolvendo o espectador, numa rua estreita ou pequena praça, ora convocando-o à distância, reconfigura o espaço público, velando fachadas, irrompendo em espaços verdes, revitalizando edifícios moribundos, impondo a sua interpelação ao passante distraído.
Pretende-se mostrar o olhar de 6 ilustradores europeus – 3 portugueses e 3 estrangeiros – sobre os diversos estratos e modos de vivenciar o território, e em particular o espaço urbano, a partir dos dois conceitos que o nome do projeto identifica – a memória e o quotidiano. A memória enquanto elemento formador da identidade, como presença marcante no património monumental e no perfil urbano, mas também no modo como se projeta na vida diária, no pulsar humano, como dialoga com o quotidiano contemporâneo.
Em paralelo, expõem-se os originais das imagens de grande escala e mostra-se uma súmula de todos os materiais produzidos durante o período de residência de cada artista, indícios possíveis sobre o modo de trabalhar de cada ilustrador, peças soltas de um processo criativo que o público é convocado a tentar reconstituir, recompor, num exercício mental e sensível, indispensável ao completamento do fazer artístico.

What the most usual supports for illustration have in common is proximity with the observer, with enjoyment of them requiring nothing more than the distance of an arm. In this intimacy of the body, the gaze takes in the whole of its space at a glance, and is then able to analyse the meanderings and minutiae of the image at some length, and without the distraction of effort.
Embarrassment or amazement or laughter or lack of understanding or perplexity can be felt without reservation and without threat in this solitary encounter. But without impeding sharing or complicity with other gazes looking over one’s shoulder at the distance of the same arm or taking in the image on the end of their own arms.
The project “Cartographies of Memory and the Everyday” takes illustration out of that distance of the comfort of the body and the gaze and projects it onto a scale which at one moment involves the spectator in a narrow street or small square and at another moment invites them into distance, thus reconfiguring the public space, veiling façades, breaking out in green spaces, revitalizing moribund buildings and imposing its interpellation on the unaware passer-by.
It intends to show the gaze of six European illustrators – three Portuguese ones and three foreign ones – on the different strata and ways of experiencing the territory, and in particular the urban space, through two concepts identified by the name of the project: memory and everyday life. Memory as an element that forms identity, as a presence which leaves a mark on the monumental heritage and the urban profile, but also in the way in which it is projected onto the everyday, onto the beating of human life and onto contemporary daily activity.
Alongside this there is the exhibiting of the originals of the large-scale images and a showing of a summary of all the materials produced during each artist’s period of residence, possible indications as to each illustrator’s working methods, individual items taken from a creative process which the public is invited to try to reconstitute and recompose within a mental and sensitive exercise that is indispensible to that which goes along with artistic making.

Anke Feuchtenberger
Berlim Leste, 1963. Uma das mais reconhecidas ilustradoras alemãs, Anke Feuchtenberger formou-se em Design Gráfico pela Kunsthochschule Berlin em 1988. Ensina desenho e ilustração na Universidade de Ciências Aplicadas em Hamburgo, desde 1997, tendo passado pelas suas aulas alguns dos nomes que mais se têm destacado na ilustração na actualidade. Em 2008, funda a editora Mami Verlag, juntamente com Stefano Ricci. Publica e expõe desde 1993 e esteve representada em numerosas feiras e bienais de arte e ilustração, bem como em várias antologias por todo o mundo. As suas edições receberam vários prémios, entre os quais Iconograda Special Award, da International Posterbiennale Lahti, Finlândia, em 2003, e o prémio Mario und Moritz da Mostra Internacional de Erlangen, Alemanha, em 2008.
East Berlin, 1963. One of the leading German comics artists, Anke Feuchtenberger graduated in Graphic Design in the Kunsthochschule in Berlin, in 1988. She teaches drawing and illustration in the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg since 1997, having taught some of the recently established artists in the illustration field. In 2008, she founded the publisher Mami Verlag, along with Stefano Ricci. She has been publishing and exhibiting her work since 1993, being represented in several fairs and art and illustration biennales, as well as in international anthologies. Her editions have been awarded several prizes, among which the Iconograda Special Award of the International Posterbiennale Lahti, Finland, in 2003, and the Mario und Moritz Prize “Bester Deutscher Comiczeichner” of the International Comic Festival Erlangen, Germany, in 2008.
Denis Deprez
Formado em 1991 em Artes Plásticas-Banda Desenhada pelo Institut Saint-Luc, em Bruxelas, edita a sua primeira publicação em 1995 pela Frémok, editora de banda desenhada de referência que ajuda a criar, na altura desta publicação ainda designada Fréon, onde foi responsável pela pré-impressão até 2000. Em 2002 publica, na Casterman, uma adaptação do “Frankenstein” de Mary Shelley em banda desenhada, e em 2003, pela mesma editora, publica uma outra adaptação de “Otelo” de Shakespeare. Em 2007, será Moby Dick, de Herman Melville que será adaptado por Deprez a banda desenhada. Desde esse ano e até hoje dá aulas na ERG (École Recheche Graphique) de cursos de narração. Ensina ainda, no instituto onde estudou, desenho artístico. Depois de editar em 2008, novamente pela Casterman, uma biografia de Rembrandt em banda desenha, trabalha, desde 2009, num longo projeto sobre a paisagem e a memória.
Graduated in 1991 in Visual Arts-Comics by the Institut Saint-Luc, in Brussels, published his first edition in 1995 by Frémok, reference comics’ publisher that he co-created, known as Fréon at that time, where he was responsible for the preprint until 2000. In 2002, he publishes, in Casterman, an adaptation to comics of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and, in 2003, with the same publisher, another adaptation, of Shakespeare’s “Othello”. In 2007, it is Herman Melville’s “Mody Dick” that Deprez adapts to comics. Since that same year and until today he lectures at ERG (École de Recherche Graphique), in Brussels, narrative courses. He also teaches, at the institute where he studied, artistic drawing. After publishing in 2008, once more with Casterman, a Rembrandt biography in comics, he works, since 2009, in a long project on landscape and memory.
João Fazenda
Lisboa, 1979. Licenciado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, o seu trabalho divide-se entre a ilustração, a animação, a banda-desenhada e a pintura. Como ilustrador para a imprensa colaborou com o Público, Visão, O Independente, Ler, The New York Times, The Guardian entre outros. Ilustrou também diversos livros, cartazes e capas de discos. É autor, juntamente com Marte, da série de banda desenhada “Loverboy” e com Pedro Brito da novela gráfica “ Tu és a mulher de minha vida, ela a mulher dos meus sonhos”. Foi distinguido por mais de uma vez pela Society of News Design com o “Award of Excellence” na categoria de ilustração. Em 2007 recebeu o Grande Prémio Stuart/ El Corte Inglés de Desenho de Imprensa 2007. Participou em diversas exposições coletivas e individuais em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Realizou os filmes de animação "Café” (em parceria com Alex Gozblau), “Algo Importante” e “ Sem querer” (com argumento de João Paulo Cotrim). Juntamente com André Carrilho, Cristina Sampaio e João Paulo Cotrim, é membro da equipa Spam Cartoon, um projeto de cartoons editoriais animados fundado em 2008.
Lisbon, 1979. With a degree in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon, his work is split between illustration, animation, comics and painting. As an illustrator for the media he has collaborated with publications such as Público, Visão, O Independente, Ler, The New York Times and The Guardian. He has also illustrated several books, posters and album covers. He co-authored, with Marte, the "Loverboy" cartoon series, and with Pedro Brito the graphic novel "Tu és a mulher de minha vida, ela a mulher dos meus sonhos." His work has been distinguished multiple times with the "Award of Excellence", in the illustration category, by the Society of News Design. In 2007 he was awarded the Stuart/El Corte Inglés Grand Prix for Media drawing. He has taken part in several group and solo exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. He directed the animated films "Café" (in partnership with Alex Gozblau), "Algo importante" e "Sem querer" (script by João Paulo Cotrim). He is Spam Cartoon team member, along with André Carrilho, Cristina Sampaio and João Paulo Cotrim, an animated editorial cartoons project founded in 2008.
Marco Mendes
Coimbra, 1978. Autor de banda desenhada, ilustrador freelancer, artista plástico e docente da disciplina de Desenho na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP) desde 2006, de várias disciplinas da Licenciatura em Banda Desenhada e Ilustração da Escola Superior Artística de Guimarães (ESAG), desde 2006, e de Campos da Ilustração no Curso de Especialização Tecnológica de Ilustração Gráfica da ESAG, desde 2008. Fundador, juntamente com Miguel Carneiro, do projeto artístico e editorial A Mula, a funcionar desde 2005. Em 2008 publicou o seu livro “Tomorrow the Chinese Will Deliver the Pandas”, editado pela Plana Press. Responsável por diversos cursos e oficinas de Banda Desenhada na Fundação de Serralves, Casa da Animação, Centro de Artes e Espectáculos da Figueira da Foz, entre outras instituições, portuguesas e espanholas. Doutorando do Curso Novos Modos de Conhecimento na Prática Artística Contemporânea, da Universidade de Vigo, Espanha, desde 2004.

Comics author, freelance illustrator, visual artist and teacther of drawing at the Architecture Faculty of the University of Porto since 2006, of several disciplines in the graduate course of Comics and Illustration of the Artistic Superior School of Guimarães, since 2006, and of Illustration Fields at the Course of Technological Specialization of Graphic Illustration in the same school, since 2008. Founder, along with Miguel Carneiro, of the artistic and editorial project A Mula, since 2005. In 2008 published his book “Tomorrow the Chinese will Deliver the Pandas”, by Plana Press. Responsable for several comics courses and workshops at the Serralves Foundation, Animation House, Arts and Show Centre of Figueira da Foz, among other institutions, Portuguese and Spanish. Currently undertaking a PhD in New Modes of Knowledge in Contemporary Artistic Practice, at the University of Vigo, Spain, since 2004.
Nuno Sousa
Porto, 1979. Mestre em Ensino de Artes Visuais pela FBAUP/ FPCEUP e licenciado em Artes Plásticas-Escultura pela FBAUP, é membro fundador do coletivo Senhorio, participando desde 2004 na produção e publicação de vários fanzines: “Barba”, “Pingue”, “Busto”, “Mister”, “Não me contes o fim – Eles Morrem Todos!”, “Formigueiro”, “Grande Prémio de Desenho”. Expõe regularmente desde 2005. Integra como compositor e intérprete os projetos musicais: Stowaways, Sr Doutor e João Peludo e a Orquestra Sonâmbula. Docente da disciplina de Desenho na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto e de Projeto I na Licenciatura de BD/Ilustração na ESAP Guimarães.

Ulli Lust
Viena, 1967. Vive em Berlim desde 1995. Durante algum tempo não falava sobre as suas aventuras embaraçosas da adolescência e gozava todos aqueles artistas de banda desenhada que faziam histórias autobiográficas. Lust desenhava relatos do quotidiano em Berlim (“Fashionvictims, Trendverächter”, publicado em 2008 pela Avant-Verlag/Berlim), BD históricas ou a série de BD erótica “springpoems”, como “Airpussy”, publicada pela L’Employé du Moi (employe-du-moi.org), Bruxelas, 2009. O seu romance gráfico “Trop n’est pas assez” ganhou o Prémio Artémisia 2011 e o Fauve d’Angoulême Prémio Revelação 2011, do Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Angoulême. Além de desenhar BD, gere a editora de banda desenhada www.electrocomics.com.

She was drawing comic reports about daily life in Berlin ("Fashionvictims, Trendverächter" published in 2008 at avant-verlag/Berlin), historic comics or the erotic comic book series "springpoems", like "Airpussy" published at L’Employé du Moi (employe-du-moi.org), Brussels, 2009. Her graphic novel "Trop n'est pas assez" won the Prix Artémisia 2011 and the Fauve d’Angoulême Prix Révélation 2011 of the Angoulême comic festival. Besides drawing comics she is running the screen-comic-publisher www.electrocomics.com.
